question

So in Pilgrim's Progress, Christian gets caught in the Slough of Despond. This would be a great opportunity for me to talk about depression or loneliness. But no. My query is completely one of pronunciation.

Slu? Slow? Slaow? Sluff? Sloff?

Darn English.

It's pronounced the same way as plough. Not at all like dough, or cough or trough, or thorough, or borough (as opposed to the American bastardisation boro). Isn't it obvious? Why can't you Americans grasp the intricacies of this simple language? Or more importantly, haven't you seen The Office?
